‘Live View’ AR walking directions launched by Google for Google Maps

For Google Maps, Google is launching a beta of its augmented reality walking directions, with a broader begin that will be available to all Android and iOS devices that have system-level support for AR. On Android, that means any smartphones that support Google’s ARcore, and on iOS, that means ARKit-compatible devices, so long as ‘Street View’ is also obtainable where you are.

Initially revealed earlier this year, the augmented reality feature of Google Maps has been available in an early alpha mode to both Google Maps Local Guides and to Google Pixel users. But beginning today, it will be rolling out to everybody and this can take some weeks depending on when you really get pushed the update.

Some of the features offered with the early version in March, it sounds like the version today should be similar, including the aptitude to just tap on any location nearby in Maps, click the ‘Directions’ button and then navigating to ‘Walking,’ then selecting ‘Live View’ which must appear near the bottom of the display.

The Live View feature is not designed with the concept that you will hold up your phone constantly as you walk. In spite of it offers easy, quick and super useful direction by showing you arrows, big readable street markers overlaid on the genuine scene in front of you. That makes it very easy to adjust yourself in an unknown setting, which is highly helpful when traveling in an unknown place.

Furthermore, Google Maps is also receiving a number of additional upgrades, together with a one-stop ‘Reservations’ tab in Maps for all your stored hotel stays, flights and more as well as it is backed up offline. This, and a new redesigned Timeline, which is g on Android devices only for now, over the next few weeks, should also be rolling out to everybody.
