Welcome to the surreal world: ‘BH 90210’ recap

BH 90210 : It is not easy to describe what exactly ‘BH 90210’ is. It is a new TV show of Fox, a 6-week summer fun-run of a somewhat trashy television set in sunny poolsides. It features celebrities playing themselves, but it is not reality TV. It’s a renewal of the 1990s teen classic ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’.

The self-importance of the new series is that the original cast of the high- school drama after 30 years reunited 30 years later at a fan meeting and then decides to mount a revitalization of the series to make money as well as help their careers.

But we are not seeing Brendan and Kelly, we are seeing Jason Priestley and Jennie Garth discussing Kelly and Brandon. Moreover, except Garth and Priestley are paying fictional versions that they are invented for the show.

So it means, Brian Austin Green is not with Megan Fox, he is with a fictional pop star Shay (La La Anthony). Jason is directing a false superhero TV series. Head of the ‘Actors Guild of America’ is Gabrielle Carteris, not the real Screen Actors Guild. Shannen Doherty, well; they all type of hate her.

It takes some time into the first episode to figuring out what this world is and who the ‘characters’ are. This Tori Spelling apparently has no currency.  They are mostly playing a random collection of has-beens trying to reclaim former wonder.

In spite of all the layers of fact, hammy performances, and fiction, ‘BH’ is no disaster. Particularly for nostalgia-crazy fans, in-jokes, Easter eggs and clips and photos from the original series will gratify.

Thus, is ‘BH’ is going to reach success like that of the original series? Absolutely not. But in an era in which revivals or remakes of well-liked stories are predictable, at least this one is curiously fun.
